Hot water recirculating pump cost: pump, install and running costs

A hot water recirculating pump sends the cooled water sitting in your hot pipes back to the water heater, so hot water reaches the tap sooner. Published national figures put the pump at about $200 to $400 and a simple professional install at about $500 to $600 in total. These are national figures, not local quotes, and each is sourced in the table below.

Which kind of system are you pricing?

A dedicated return line adds a third pipe from the farthest fixture back to the water heater. Family Handyman says this full system suits new construction and is expensive and difficult to add to an existing home. A comfort system, also called a crossover system, sends the cooled water back through your existing cold water pipe instead. Family Handyman calls it the cheaper and much easier choice for existing homes, with one drawback: it takes longer to get cold water (Family Handyman, Checked Oct 14, 2026).

Controls: demand, timer or always on

ENERGY STAR says demand systems can be started with a button, a timer or a motion sensor, and that systems running continuously can use more energy, through pumping and heat lost from the pipes, than they save by cutting hot water waste (ENERGY STAR, Checked Oct 14, 2026).

What changes the price

Replacing a pump you already have

If the loop is already plumbed and only the pump has failed, the job is smaller. HomeGuide lists recirculating pump replacement at $150 to $680 nationally (HomeGuide, Checked Oct 14, 2026). Family Handyman says a pump should give about 10 years of use, barring a malfunction (Family Handyman, Checked Oct 14, 2026).

Will it pay for itself?

Mostly it buys convenience. A plumber quoted by Family Handyman estimates it can save roughly $120 in 12 months (Family Handyman, Checked Oct 14, 2026). HomeGuide says recirculating pumps save a family of four 12,000 to 36,000 gallons of water a year (HomeGuide, Checked Oct 14, 2026). If lower bills are part of the goal, ask for a demand or timer control rather than a pump that runs all day.

Check the water heater first. Our sister site has a water heater maintenance checklist and a guide to finding a water heater leak. If it is near the end of its life, compare water heater replacement cost and tankless water heater installation cost.

Doing it yourself

The guides disagree. Family Handyman says many comfort systems can be DIY installed, quotes a plumber calling it a moderate job of one to three hours if the setup is compatible, and recommends a pro if you need new plumbing (Family Handyman, Checked Oct 14, 2026). Angi calls installation a big job for a licensed plumber (Angi, Checked Oct 14, 2026).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a hot water recirculating pump cost?

Angi's average for a hot water recirculating system is $200 to $400, depending on the pump material. Family Handyman puts current pump prices at $250 to $300.

How much does it cost to install a hot water recirculating pump?

Family Handyman says professional installation adds at least the price of the pump, for a total of $500 to $600. Angi lists plumber rates at $45 to $200 per hour on average.

How much does it cost to replace a recirculating pump?

HomeGuide lists recirculating pump replacement at $150 to $680 nationally.

Does a recirculating pump raise my energy bill?

It can. ENERGY STAR says a system that runs continuously can use more energy than it saves. A demand system, started by a button, timer or motion sensor, runs the pump only when activated.

Do I need a dedicated return line?

No. A comfort system uses the existing cold water pipe as the return, which Family Handyman calls the cheaper and much easier choice for existing homes. A dedicated return line suits new construction.
